Abstract

This study investigated the association between adolescents' perceptions of parental media usage and their self-esteem with
particular reference to Vadodara city in Gujarat state. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted for the collection of data
from 300 adolescents of age group 13-17 enrolled in English-medium institutions through the self-administered tool PMUPS
and RSES. Analysis of data was carried out using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient and Structural Equation
Modeling employing statistical packages SPSS (version 23) and AMOS (version 20), respectively. A significant negative
relationship was found between adolescents' perceptions of parental media usage and self-esteem. Further analysis using SEM
showed that adolescents' perceptions of parental media usage was significantly and negatively associated with self-esteem with
a medium to large magnitude of effect size. The model accounted for 23% variance in self-esteem scores. The current findings
are in line with existing literature regarding the impact of technoference on self-concept formation.
